When I was growing up my Dad always told me nothing is ever as good as it seems and nothing is ever as bad as it seems. I'm realizing the importance of this balanced perspective in my adult life. When things are great it's hard to understand this, but when things are bad it's reassuring to know that no matter how good or bad, things will always change. There's an old story about a king who sought a universal truth that would give his people hope in dark times and help them remain humble in good times. The wise men offered him four words: "This too, shall pass." We've all been through a lot in the last few years. The economy has bounced around, natural disasters have devastated around the globe, wars have been fought. But the universe seeks balance and so should we. We respond to tragedy by offering hope. We respond to scarcity by sharing whatever we have. We respond to anger and fear with words and acts of peace. And therein lies the key to keeping a balanced perspective. It's us. In difficulty we must choose to rise above. In prosperity we must choose not to squander or flaunt. A balance perspective is a choice. The choice is yours.
