“You’ll never make it in NYC. It will eat you up” were the words I heard from a dance instructor after I told her I wanted to move to NYC after college to pursue a dance career.
There are many people who will doubt your abilities, but your abilities lie within yourself, not with the opinion of others. Nobody but you can dictate your level of determination, dedication and resilience. Mine paid off with a 13 year professional dance career in NYC and landing my dream job with the Radio City Rockettes.
My dance professor could not see my determination and dedication to work three jobs and still have the energy to hustle in to auditions and technique class every day. I would be lying if I said her comments did not shake my confidence or steal some excitement, but it’s a good thing that my voice was stronger because conquering a dream is the most powerful feeling to experience. Believing in yourself is the first step that will build courage and allow you to take big risks and to go for your dreams, even when others doubt your abilities. So if you have negative voices surrounding you, stay strong and turn your positive inner voice up to reach your goal.
It is always worth it!
