Life can be like washing the dishes. If you focus on getting the dishes done so that your kitchen will be clean, you miss everything that happens between dirty and clean…the warmth of the water, the pop of the bubbles, the movement of your hands. You miss the life that happens in the middle zone – between your life and what you think your life should be like. When you miss those moments because you would rather be doing something else, you are missing your own life…those moments are gone. Your life might get better if you learn to be awake and alive NOW. Take this moment for what it is. You still have to live in your own skin and deal with boredom, rejection, loneliness and disappointment. Even “Someone Special” has to come home at night like the “Nobodies” do and fall asleep alone…so you might as well learn to pay attention to NOW.
Learn how to inhabit the life you have chosen, how to take up every inch of your skin, occupy the space in the body you were given. It is your place and only yours. Pay attention to your breath…your arms…your legs. Listen to sounds…the scrape of a chair, the whirr of a copy machine, the rhythm in the song and dance. Notice colors…the royal blue of a friend’s dress, the coffee stain on a co-worker’s tie. Wake up to the riot of life around you in every second. What if what you needed was right in front of you and you were not recognizing it? You probably have everything you need to be content…your real work in life is to do whatever it takes to realize that. Have you noticed? How you spend your days is how you spend your life.
