Share The Road

Share The Road

About 16 months ago, I bought my first road bike to train for my first triathlon.  I quickly learned that there were a lot of bells and whistles to be purchased along with it – a helmet, cycling shoes, clips, bike shorts, glasses, gloves, leg warmers, aero bars, water bottle cages, and yes….the most important, Hoo Ha Ride Glide!  (Google it, it’s worth every penny!) I also discovered that one of the trickiest parts about biking (aside from clipping in and out) was learning how to do it safely.  As a driver behind the wheel of a car, you see signs posted on the road that have a little bike symbol and read, “Share the Road.” I never really thought about the true meaning of that until I became a biker.  I wanted to share a few things that will help everyone be safe on the road!
  1. Biker’s can’t brake as quickly as you. Please keep that in mind.
  2. Please look before you swing your car door open, or before you pull out of your driveway.
  3. Please don’t honk at a biker because you think we are in your way! It’s rude, loud, and unnecessary.
  4. Please share the road. Cars and bikers both need a little room to roll.
  5. Please don’t let your kids run around on the bike path for “bikers only.” It’s dangerous for everyone!
  6. Please don’t  yell unproductive things out your window. We are aware our bike garb isn’t the sexiest, but it still doesn’t make you look cooler than us.

P.S. This weekend, a driver gave me the thumbs up out his window and a smile in the rear view. It’s amazing what a simple friendly gesture like that can do. He helped give me a burst of energy to carry me up the rest of that steep hill! So, next time you are driving around and see a pack of bikers on your right, give them a little extra cushion as you pass, and try to remember your biker awareness! The biking world thanks you!
